Critical Reflections for UCS 1001

Module learning Reflection

Over the past 12 weeks, this module has been instrumental in refining my critical thinking, writing, and communication skills. Having previously taken a similar module in polytechnic, Engineering Communications, I entered this course with some familiarity. However, approaching the subject as a university student provided deeper insights and a more structured understanding. The Paul-Elder critical thinking framework, in particular, was transformative. Although I initially found it challenging to grasp, each lesson helped me understand and apply its components more effectively. This framework not only enhanced my ability to navigate this module but also improved my problem-solving skills in other areas, such as coding. Moreover, my writing skills have advanced significantly. By learning to thoroughly analyze assignment rubrics, I was able to write with greater clarity and precision, ensuring my ideas were well-structured and accessible to readers.

A key takeaway from this module was overcoming my stage fright and building confidence in delivering oral presentations. Public speaking has always been a challenge for me, and I previously relied heavily on scripts to get through presentations. However, with guidance from Professor Brad, I adopted practical strategies such as practicing in front of a mirror and focusing on friendly faces during the presentation. Transitioning from scripts to using concise key points allowed me to present more naturally and with greater confidence. While my presentation was not flawless, it was a marked improvement compared to my previous attempts. By the end of this module, I felt more confident in my ability to think critically, write effectively, and communicate clearly—valuable skills that I will continue to build upon in the future.

Project Learning Reflection

Over the final weeks of this module, we learned valuable research techniques through platforms such as Google Scholar, the SIT library, and generative AI tools. These resources not only enhanced my research skills but also significantly contributed to the quality of our presentation. By using these tools effectively and applying filtering techniques, I was able to quickly and efficiently locate the necessary information for our technical report. This streamlined approach allowed our group to focus on the key points, resulting in a concise and impactful report and presentation.

This project also highlighted the importance of teamwork. Despite our busy schedules, we dedicated 1 to 1.5 hours daily to collaborate on the technical report. Through consistent effort and mutual support, we worked together to produce a high-quality report that reflects our growth and learning as UCS students. This experience underscored the value of collaboration and reinforced the importance of collective commitment to achieving shared goals.

My Introduction (Updated)

Dear Professor Blackstone,  My name is  Ashutosh Kumar, but you can call me Ash. I graduated from Ngee Ann Polytechnic in 2022 with a diploma in mechanical engineering. Growing up around relatives in diverse industries, my uncle, an oil engineer, sparked my love for engineering. He would explain the math and science behind his work and projects that he led, in a way a 10-year-old could grasp, which led to an interest in those subjects to pursue and do well in school. One of my communication strengths is active listening. Instead of hearing words, I tend to understand the message someone is trying to convey. During my counselling sessions, my counsellor actively listens and provides feedback on how I can improve. Understanding the value of active listening has helped me build trust and maintain meaningful relationships with friends, peers, and others.  One area I need to improve is the need for more clarity. I sometimes beat around the bush instead of getting straight...

The importance of communication skills for future engineers (Interpretation of Quote)

“Communication skills are an essential component in the education of engineering students to facilitate not just students’ education but also to prepare them for their future careers.” - Marc Riemer, Faculty of Engineering, Monash University (2007) To my interpretation of this quote, communication is one of the most overlooked skills any one can learn, be it an engineering student or a student from other fields of work. For engineering students, communication skills are essential as it helps to strengthen the bond between a team when taking on projects as it helps to get ideas across easily from one group member to another for example. Communication helps to solve issues where different ideas are needed. This can be done by members of the team through communicating with one another.  This in turn helps to build teamwork between them, which is also another key skill.   Engineering students are mostly bound to the technical terms they have learnt and, when they are put in ...

Individual Research contributions to Group project

Updated on 1/11/2024 Research on KERS Functions: Used ChatGPT with the specific query: "Describe the functions of a KERS in cars." Gathered information on how KERS operates in vehicles. Research on Ampaire and EEL Aircraft: Used Google's search engine and gAI tools for background information on Ampaire and their EEL aircraft. Focused on understanding the aircraft’s specifications and requirements. Application of Research: Analyzed the background information to determine a suitable type of KERS for the EEL aircraft. Prioritized considerations such as weight, simplicity, and effectiveness for integration.  Updated on 25/11/2024 Researched the development of Solid-state batteries by NASA for their SABERS program via ChatGPT and CoPilot as backup research Read up on the impacts of aviation on the environment from a web report on ResearchGate Using Google search, I looked up the benefits of solid-state batteries on the environment— How the production of solid-state batteries c...
